Bad Times Mean Good Profits for
Mini Golf Operators
 |
The sport of miniature golf was born during the
depression in the 1930's; "fueled by a strong need for recreation,
yet something that didn't cost a lot...and gave people an escape from
the realities of life. Mini courses appeared in every city," says Ralph
J. Lomma, President of the 55-year old Scranton, PA-based firm.
History does, in fact, repeat itself, for in cities
suffering from high unemployment rates, miniature golf operators are
experiencing boom times.
Not coincidentally, the Lomma Miniature Golf
Company...the world's oldest and largest manufacturer of miniature golf
courses...had its best season in its 55-year history last
year!
According to Ralph J. Lomma, President, "Miniature golf
is a fun activity in which the whole family are now introducing their
children and grandchildren to a great pastime. No matter what level of
skill, miniature golf is a blast and the level of enjoyment for this
activity has stood the test of time."
After the initial investment in the location and the
course itself, Verhead consists of mainly of upkeep of the facility and
equipment and day-to-day operation usually requires limited personnel.
In fact, it's a family-owned business that can be truly
family-run...with even the children helping out with tasks such as
counting the golf balls and handing out equipment.
